The following documents are transcripts of interviews which occurred in Vietnam from 2007 to 2011. The interviewees were elderly and retired cadres (“can bo” in Vietnamese) who participated in the Vietnamese revolutionary movement from the 1930s to the 1950s, mainly at the village and district levels. Most of them were born in the 1910s, 1920s or early 1930s, and the vast majority came from areas in the Red River Delta and from provinces around Hanoi. The 277 cadres who took part in the project were promised five years of anonymity following the time of their interview. The original questions for the interviews were provided by Dr. David Marr from the Australian National University, and the project was co-sponsored by the Vietnam Historical Association and Christopher Goscha at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Dr. Dao The Duc and Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh organized and led the team of interviewers in Vietnam. The Australian Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) provided funding for the project. The interviews were given short summaries in English and added here by Félix Rhéaume from the Université du Québec à Montréal, also with support from the SSHRC.
